Brace ! Brace ! Brace !

Nervous fliers, like me, will be familiar with the fantasies that fill your mind every time the flight attendant goes through that lunatic spiel before take-off about how to survive the unsurvivable ('in the unlikely event that the aircraft lands on water - yeah, right') and in particular, the bit about how to assume the Brace position, memorably parodied as 'Put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye'.

Back at meltdown central after that regrettable lapse into the personal in my last blog, I can report that the atmosphere is definitely approaching what you imagine it'll be like on the plane when the captain announces it's time to assume the Brace position.  On this one day alone, Citigroup announced it is breaking itself into its component parts - so the short logo makes a LOT of sense, remember you read it here first - Barclays piled Pelion upon Ossa by adding a second day of redundancy announcements, and as the few workers not currently battling with the norovirus straggled from their offices this evening, the giant Evening Standard poster headline was :  BARCLAYS, HSBC PLUNGE ON CITY PANIC.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, the death toll has passed 1,000, at least a third of them children.

And this seems like a good moment to point out that the approaching Monday, January 19th, is the one officially designated for 2009 as the most depressing Monday of the year.  If you don't believe me just look at

All in all, it seems only fair for me to issue this warning to my readers now:

brace   !  brace !  brace !

because, if we can get through this next bit and make it to Obama Day (20 January) things just might get a little better.
